20 “For long ago you broke your yoke and burst your bonds; and you said, ‘I will not serve.’ Yea, upon every high hill and under every green tree you bowed down as a harlot.

And Jeroboam appointed a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month like the feast that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices upon the altar; so he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he made. And he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made.


For they also built for themselves high places, and pillars, and Asherim on every high hill and under every green tree;


he brought them out of darkness and gloom, and broke their bonds asunder.


“Let us burst their bonds asunder, and cast their cords from us.”


For they provoked him to anger with their high places; they moved him to jealousy with their graven images.


And all the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” And Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.

Rejoice not, O Israel! Exult not like the peoples; for you have played the harlot, forsaking your God. You have loved a harlot's hire upon all threshing floors.


I am the Lord your God, who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that you should not be their slaves; and I have broken the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect.


And now I will break his yoke from off you and will burst your bonds asunder.”


You shall surely destroy all the places where the nations whom you shall dispossess served their gods, upon the high mountains and upon the hills and under every green tree;

Go near, and hear all that the Lord our God will say; and speak to us all that the Lord our God will speak to you; and we will hear and do it.’


And they answered Joshua, “All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.


And the people said to Joshua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey.”


And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a great stone, and set it up there under the oak in the sanctuary of the Lord.


Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who is seated upon many waters,


And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines; and they forsook the Lord, and did not serve him.
