And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it with fire, and ground it to powder, and scattered it upon the water, and made the people of Israel drink it.


But he does not so intend, and his mind does not so think; but it is in his mind to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few;


they will not have regard for the altars, the work of their hands, and they will not look to what their own fingers have made, either the Asherim or the altars of incense.


Their land is filled with idols; they bow down to the work of their hands, to what their own fingers have made.


They are dead, they will not live; they are shades, they will not arise; to that end thou hast visited them with destruction and wiped out all remembrance of them.


Behold, you are nothing, and your work is naught; an abomination is he who chooses you.


Behold, they are all a delusion; their works are nothing; their molten images are empty wind.


The craftsman encourages the goldsmith, and he who smooths with the hammer him who strikes the anvil, saying of the soldering, “It is good”; and they fasten it with nails so that it cannot be moved.


And the rest of it he makes into a god, his idol; and falls down to it and worships it; he prays to it and says, “Deliver me, for thou art my god!”


And I will utter my judgments against them, for all their wickedness in forsaking me; they have burned incense to other gods, and worshiped the works of their own hands.


Thus shall you say to them: “The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under the heavens.”


Can man make for himself gods? Such are no gods!”


Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit.
