Exodus 13:17 - Revised Standard Version

17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest the people repent when they see war, and return to Egypt.”

By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king; for he endured as seeing him who is invisible.


Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home.’ ” And Gideon tested them; twenty-two thousand returned, and ten thousand remained.
