Can wicked rulers be allied with thee, who frame mischief by statute?


Because sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the sons of men is fully set to do evil.


You said, “I shall be mistress for ever,” so that you did not lay these things to heart or remember their end.


“Come,” they say, “let us get wine, let us fill ourselves with strong drink; and tomorrow will be like this day, great beyond measure.”


Those who feasted on dainties perish in the streets; those who were brought up in purple lie on ash heaps.


“Son of man, what is this proverb that you have about the land of Israel, saying, ‘The days grow long, and every vision comes to naught’?


“Son of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, ‘The vision that he sees is for many days hence, and he prophesies of times far off.’


The sound of a carefree multitude was with her; and with men of the common sort drunkards were brought from the wilderness; and they put bracelets upon the hands of the women, and beautiful crowns upon their heads.


“They do not know how to do right,” says the Lord, “those who store up violence and robbery in their strongholds.”


Proclaim to the strongholds in Assyria, and to the strongholds in the land of Egypt, and say, “Assemble yourselves upon the mountains of Samaria, and see the great tumults within her, and the oppressions in her midst.”


For I know how many are your transgressions, and how great are your sins— you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and turn aside the needy in the gate.


Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord! Why would you have the day of the Lord? It is darkness, and not light;


Do horses run upon rocks? Does one plow the sea with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood—


All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, who say, ‘Evil shall not overtake or meet us.’


Your rich men are full of violence; your inhabitants speak lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.


But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’


When people say, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as travail comes upon a woman with child, and there will be no escape.


and saying, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things have continued as they were from the beginning of creation.”


In one hour all this wealth has been laid waste.” And all shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off
