A glad heart makes a cheerful countenance, but by sorrow of heart the spirit is broken.


All the days of the afflicted are evil, but a cheerful heart has a continual feast.


A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up the bones.


A man's spirit will endure sickness; but a broken spirit who can bear?


Sorrow is better than laughter, for by sadness of countenance the heart is made glad.


With weeping they shall come, and with consolations I will lead them back, I will make them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble; for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my first-born.


And if any survivors escape, they will be on the mountains, like doves of the valleys, all of them moaning, every one over his iniquity.


When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God repented of the evil which he had said he would do to them; and he did not do it.


but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them cry mightily to God; yea, let every one turn from his evil way and from the violence which is in his hands.


But God said to Jonah, “Do you do well to be angry for the plant?” And he said, “I do well to be angry, angry enough to die.”


And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, “Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.


Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”


But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’


When they heard this they were silenced. And they glorified God, saying, “Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance unto life.”


Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,


I fear that when I come again my God may humble me before you, and I may have to mourn over many of those who sinned before and have not repented of the impurity, immorality, and licentiousness which they have practiced.


As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting; for you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.


For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears.


And David was greatly distressed; for the people spoke of stoning him, because all the people were bitter in soul, each for his sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.
