And it was told David, “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” And David said, “O Lord, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.”


Now in those days the counsel which Ahithophel gave was as if one consulted the oracle of God; so was all the counsel of Ahithophel esteemed, both by David and by Absalom.


And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, so that the Lord might bring evil upon Absalom.


When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and went off home to his own city. And he set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the tomb of his father.


He leads counselors away stripped, and judges he makes fools.


He deprives of speech those who are trusted, and takes away the discernment of the elders.


He takes away understanding from the chiefs of the people of the earth, and makes them wander in a pathless waste.


Your mind will muse on the terror: “Where is he who counted, where is he who weighed the tribute? Where is he who counted the towers?”


who frustrates the omens of liars, and makes fools of diviners; who turns wise men back, and makes their knowledge foolish;


Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?


Who would not fear thee, O King of the nations? For this is thy due; for among all the wise ones of the nations and in all their kingdoms there is none like thee.


As for what was sown among thorns, this is he who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the delight in riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.


Now is the judgment of this world, now shall the ruler of this world be cast out;


Some also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers met him. And some said, “What would this babbler say?” Others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities”—because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.


Ever since the creation of the world his invisible nature, namely, his eternal power and deity, has been clearly perceived in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse;


Claiming to be wise, they became fools,


For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the cleverness of the clever I will thwart.”


For consider your call, brethren; not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth;


but God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong,


God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are,


But when we are judged by the Lord, we are chastened so that we may not be condemned along with the world.


Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away.


None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.


Let no one deceive himself. If any one among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.


For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,”


Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases?


Unfaithful creatures! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
