and so he said to him, “Because you have asked for the wisdom to rule justly, instead of long life for yourself or riches or the death of your enemies,


They cry for help, but God doesn't answer, for they are proud and evil.


They cry for help, but no one saves them; they call to the Lord, but he does not answer.


Then you will call for wisdom, but I will not answer. You may look for me everywhere, but you will not find me.


The Lord is pleased when good people pray, but hates the sacrifices that the wicked bring him.


If you refuse to listen to the cry of the poor, your own cry for help will not be heard.


The Lord hates it when wicked people offer him sacrifices, especially if they do it from evil motives.


So now I, the Lord, warn them that I am going to bring destruction on them, and they will not escape. And when they cry out to me for help, I will not listen to them.


Jeremiah, don't pray to me or plead with me on behalf of these people. When they are in trouble and call to me for help, I will not listen to them.”


Even if they fast, I will not listen to their cry for help; and even if they offer me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not be pleased with them. Instead, I will kill them in war and by starvation and disease.”


The time is coming when you will cry out to the Lord, but he will not answer you. He will not listen to your prayers, for you have done evil.


Because they did not listen when I spoke, I did not answer when they prayed.


“You don't know what you are asking for,” Jesus answered the sons. “Can you drink the cup of suffering that I am about to drink?” “We can,” they answered.


Jesus said to them, “You don't know what you are asking for. Can you drink the cup of suffering that I must drink? Can you be baptized in the way I must be baptized?”


For those who ask will receive, and those who seek will find, and the door will be opened to anyone who knocks.


After a few days the younger son sold his part of the property and left home with the money. He went to a country far away, where he wasted his money in reckless living.


But this son of yours wasted all your property on prostitutes, and when he comes back home, you kill the prize calf for him!’


Where do all the fights and quarrels among you come from? They come from your desires for pleasure, which are constantly fighting within you.


We receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him.


We have courage in God's presence, because we are sure that he hears us if we ask him for anything that is according to his will.
