and spoke to them according to the young men’s advice: ‘My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with barbed whips.’


The governors  who preceded me had heavily burdened the people, taking from them food and wine as well as half a kilogram  of silver. Their subordinates also oppressed the people, but because of the fear of God, I didn’t do this.


But you should select from all the people able men, God-fearing, trustworthy, and hating dishonest profit.  Place them over the people as commanders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.


The one who profits dishonestly  troubles his household, but the one who hates bribes will live.


Woe to you, land, when your king is a youth and your princes feast in the morning.


Again, I observed all the acts of oppression being done under the sun.  Look at the tears of those who are oppressed; they have no one to comfort them. Power is with those who oppress them; they have no one to comfort them.


Youths oppress my people, and women rule over them. My people, your leaders mislead you; they confuse the direction of your paths.


Listen to this message, you cows of Bashan who are on the hill of Samaria, women who oppress the poor and crush the needy, who say to their husbands, ‘Bring us something to drink.’
