Next, the king stood by the pillar  , and made a covenant  in the Lord’s presence to follow the Lord and to keep his commands, his decrees, and his statutes with all his heart and with all his soul  in order to carry out the words of this covenant that were written in this book; all the people agreed to  the covenant.


Therefore, let’s make a covenant before our God  to send away all the foreign wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who tremble at the command of our God.  Let it be done according to the law.


The governor  ordered them not to eat the most holy things until there was a priest who could consult the Urim and Thummim.


The words of Nehemiah  son of Hacaliah: During the month of Chislev  in the twentieth year,  when I was in the fortress city of Susa,


We will not give our daughters in marriage to the surrounding peoples and will not take their daughters as wives for our sons.


The governor  ordered them not to eat the most holy things until there was a priest who could consult the Urim and Thummim.


Some of the family heads contributed to the project. The governor gave 1,000 gold coins,  50 bowls, and 530 priestly garments to the treasury.


Nehemiah the governor,  Ezra the priest and scribe,  and the Levites who were instructing the people said to all of them, ‘This day  is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.’  For all the people were weeping as they heard the words of the law.


In view of all this, we are making a binding agreement  in writing on a sealed document containing the names of our leaders, Levites, and priests.


And Moses wrote  down all the words of the Lord. He rose early the next morning and set up an altar and twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel at the base of the mountain.
