When you lie  down, you will not be afraid; you will lie down, and your sleep will be pleasant.


I will restore your judges  to what they were at first, and your advisers to what they were at the start. Afterwards you will be called the Righteous City, a Faithful Town.’


Zion will be redeemed by justice, those who repent, by righteousness.


you will sing this song of contempt about the king of Babylon  and say: How the oppressor has quietened down, and how the raging  has become quiet!


Let my refugees stay with you; be a refuge for Moab  from the aggressor. When the oppressor has gone, destruction has ended, and marauders have vanished from the land,


He will settle disputes among the nations and provide arbitration for many peoples. They will beat their swords into ploughs and their spears into pruning knives. Nation will not take up the sword against nation, and they will never again train for war.


Open the gates so a righteous nation can come in – one that remains faithful.


The result of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quiet confidence for ever.


Your mind will meditate on the past terror: ‘Where is the accountant? Where is the tribute collector? Where is the one who spied out our defences? ’


It will be said about me, “Righteousness and strength are found only in the  Lord.” ’ All who are enraged against him will come to him and be put to shame.


I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh, and they will be drunk with their own blood as with sweet wine. Then all humanity will know that I, the Lord, am your Saviour, and your Redeemer,  the Mighty One of Jacob.’


But you have forgotten the  Lord, your Maker, who stretched out the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth. You are in constant dread all day long because of the fury of the oppressor, who has set himself to destroy. But where is the fury of the oppressor?


‘Wake up, wake up; put on your strength, Zion! Put on your beautiful garments, Jerusalem, the holy city! For the uncircumcised and the unclean will no longer enter you.


‘Do not be afraid, for you will not be put to shame; don’t be humiliated, for you will not be disgraced. For you will forget the shame of your youth, and you will no longer remember the disgrace of your widowhood.


Violence will never again be heard of in your land; devastation and destruction will be gone from your borders. You will call your walls Salvation and your city gates Praise.


All your people will be righteous; they will possess the land for ever; they are the branch I planted, the work of my   hands, so that I may be glorified.


I rejoice greatly in the  Lord, I exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation and wrapped me in a robe of righteousness, as a groom wears a turban and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.


I will not keep silent because of Zion, and I will not keep still because of Jerusalem, until her righteousness shines like a bright light, and her salvation like a flaming torch.


For you have shattered their oppressive yoke and the rod on their shoulders, the staff of their oppressor, just as you did on the day of Midian.


The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from now on and for ever. The zeal of the Lord of Armies will accomplish this.


As for you, my servant Jacob, do not be afraid – this is the  Lord’s declaration – and do not be discouraged, Israel, for without fail I will save you out of a distant place, your descendants from the land of their captivity! Jacob will return and have calm and quiet with no one to frighten him.


His children will be as in past days; his congregation will be established in my presence. I will punish all his oppressors.


This is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘When I restore their fortunes,  they will once again speak this word in the land of Judah and in its cities: “May the Lord bless you, righteous settlement,  holy mountain.”


Sow righteousness for yourselves and reap faithful love; break up your unploughed ground. It is time to seek the  Lord until he comes  and sends righteousness on you like the rain.


The Lord says this: ‘I will return to Zion and live in Jerusalem. Then Jerusalem will be called the Faithful City;  the mountain of the Lord of Armies will be called the Holy Mountain.’


I will camp at my house as a guard, against those who march back and forth, and no oppressor will march against them again, for now I have seen with my own eyes.


But based on his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth,  where righteousness dwells.
