A wicked ruler over a helpless people is like a roaring lion or a charging bear.


Woe to Assyria, the rod of my anger – the staff in their hands is my wrath.


I will punish the world for its evil, and wicked people for their iniquities. I will put an end to the pride of the arrogant and humiliate the insolence of tyrants.

For you have shattered their oppressive yoke and the rod on their shoulders, the staff of their oppressor, just as you did on the day of Midian.


People have heard me groaning, but there is no one to comfort me. All my enemies have heard of my misfortune; they are glad that you have caused it. Bring on the day you have announced, so that they may become like me.


Will they therefore empty their net and continually slaughter nations without mercy?
