Moses said to Joshua,  ‘Select some men for us and go and fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the hilltop with God’s staff in my hand.’


He sent word to Moses, ‘I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons.’


She gave birth to a son whom he named Gershom,  for he said, ‘I have been a resident foreigner  in a foreign land.’


And take this staff in your hand that you will perform the signs with.’


The Lord asked him, ‘What is that in your hand? ’ ‘A staff,’ he replied.


Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff, so that abundant water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.


‘When he heard this, Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.
