and said to him, “Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?”
And he said this plainly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.
As the people were in expectation, and all men questioned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he were the Christ,
And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we stone you but for blasphemy; because you, being a man, make yourself God.”
“I have said this to you in figures; the hour is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in figures but tell you plainly of the Father.
They said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Even what I have told you from the beginning.
Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you claim to be?”
His parents said this because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if any one should confess him to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.
