Jeremiah also uttered a lament for Josiah; and all the singing men and singing women have spoken of Josiah in their laments to this day. They made these an ordinance in Israel; behold, they are written in the Laments.


Yea, let that night be barren; let no joyful cry be heard in it.


Let the stars of its dawn be dark; let it hope for light, but have none, nor see the eyelids of the morning;


“Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook, or press down his tongue with a cord?


No one is so fierce that he dares to stir him up. Who then is he that can stand before me?


When he raises himself up the mighty are afraid; at the crashing they are beside themselves.


In that day the Lord with his hard and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the twisting serpent, and he will slay the dragon that is in the sea.


Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the Lord: “In all the squares there shall be wailing; and in all the streets they shall say, ‘Alas! alas!’ They shall call the farmers to mourning and to wailing those who are skilled in lamentation,


‘We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’


When they came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, he saw a tumult, and people weeping and wailing loudly.
