Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to the men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all.

And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, so that the Lord might bring evil upon Absalom.


When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and went off home to his own city. And he set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the tomb of his father.


And he said, “Hearken, all Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, and King Jehoshaphat: Thus says the Lord to you, ‘Fear not, and be not dismayed at this great multitude; for the battle is not yours but God's.


When he is quiet, who can condemn? When he hides his face, who can behold him, whether it be a nation or a man?—


The stouthearted were stripped of their spoil; they sank into sleep; all the men of war were unable to use their hands.


the wise man also may hear and increase in learning, and the man of understanding acquire skill,


So I turned to consider wisdom and madness and folly; for what can the man do who comes after the king? Only what he has already done.


I know that whatever God does endures for ever; nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it; God has made it so, in order that men should fear before him.


I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked, for he has appointed a time for every matter, and for every work.


Again I saw all the oppressions that are practiced under the sun. And behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no one to comfort them! On the side of their oppressors there was power, and there was no one to comfort them.


Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man's envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.


Consider the work of God; who can make straight what he has made crooked?


since one fate comes to all, to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil, to the clean and the unclean, to him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice. As is the good man, so is the sinner; and he who swears is as he who shuns an oath.


This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that one fate comes to all; also the hearts of men are full of evil, and madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead.


The swift cannot flee away, nor the warrior escape; in the north by the river Euphrates they have stumbled and fallen.


“How do you say, ‘We are heroes and mighty men of war’?


Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches;


all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing; and he does according to his will in the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What doest thou?”


Then he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.


Then once more you shall distinguish between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him.


In him, according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to the counsel of his will,


Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’


You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth; that he may confirm his covenant which he swore to your fathers, as at this day.


So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine, and killed him; there was no sword in the hand of David.


And watch; if it goes up on the way to its own land, to Beth-shemesh, then it is he who has done us this great harm; but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that struck us, it happened to us by chance.”
