Ecclesiastes 4:2 - Revised Standard Version

And I thought the dead who are already dead more fortunate than the living who are still alive;

So I praised and thought more fortunate those who have been long dead than the living, who are still alive.

Wherefore I praised the dead that have been long dead more than the living that are yet alive;

So I declare that the dead, who have already died, are more fortunate than the living, who are still alive.

And so, I praised the dead more than the living.

And I praised the dead rather than the living:

So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me; for all is vanity and a striving after wind.

A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death, than the day of birth.

Weep not for him who is dead, nor bemoan him; but weep bitterly for him who goes away, for he shall return no more to see his native land.
