and also because of all the innocent blood he had shed. He had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood,  and the Lord was not willing to forgive.


And I said: My God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift my face towards you, my God, because our iniquities are higher than our heads and our guilt is as high as the heavens.


But they were disobedient and rebelled against you. They flung your law behind their backs and killed your prophets who warned them in order to turn them back to you. They committed terrible blasphemies.


We acknowledge our wickedness,  Lord, the iniquity of our ancestors; indeed, we have sinned against you.


Only acknowledge your guilt   – you have rebelled against the  Lord your God. You have scattered your favours to strangers under every green tree and have not obeyed me. This is the  Lord’s declaration.


The Lord is just, for I have rebelled against his command. Listen, all you people; look at my pain. My young women and young men have gone into captivity.


The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned.


Because of the depravity of your uncleanness – since I tried to purify you, but you would not be purified from your uncleanness – you will not be pure again until I have satisfied my wrath on you.


Now, Lord our God #– #who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a strong hand  and made your name renowned  as it is this day #– #we have sinned, we have acted wickedly.


Where are your ancestors now? And do the prophets live for ever?


But didn’t my words and my statutes that I commanded my servants the prophets overtake your ancestors? ” ’ So the people repented and said, ‘As the Lord of Armies decided to deal with us for our ways and our deeds, so he has dealt with us.’
