Turkey: Christian player Christian Atsu found alive in the rubble

Amidst the destruction, Ghanaian player and former Chelsea midfielder Christian Atsu was found alive in the rubble.

After the US Geological Survey reported a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria, the world was shocked. This earthquake was the strongest in Turkey in more than 80 years, killing more than 11,000 people, according to the latest reports.

The player, who has been recognized in the past as a Pentecostal Christian, was trapped in the rubble for hours and was rescued overnight, the Ghanaian ambassador to Turkey confirmed.

Many, like the former president of Ghana and other leaders, asked to pray for the player after learning that he might be under the rubble of his building.

In Portugal, the newspaper “A Bola” claimed that Atsu had already been rescued alive and was in the hospital. At first, the information hasn’t been confirmed by either the official Turkish media or the player’s own team. But this Tuesday 02/07/23, the club confirmed the happy news.

Christian Atsu is currently being treated at the hospital. He has some injuries, but there is no further information, a representative of Atsu’s current club said. They also report that Hatayspor sporting director Taner Savut remains trapped under the rubble and search efforts continue.

Atsu joined Turkish football from Al-Raed Saudi this season in September 2022. Hatayspor did not play the expected role, but against Kasimpasa at the weekend he was decisive for the team’s victory (1:0) scoring the winning goal.
