Mark Carney: 5 things to know about Canada’s newly elected PM

UPDATE: 10 a.m. ET April 29: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney led the Liberal Party to a narrow victory in Monday’s election. The party earned a fourth term in power as it seeks to oppose U.S President Donald Trump.

Declaring victory early Tuesday, Carney said he will push back against Trump’s “threats,” as the president continues to call Canada the “51st state.” He called for unity as a nation.

“As I have been warning for months, America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country,” Carney said. “But these are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never ever happen.”

Original article published March 11, 2025:

The Liberal Party of Canada overwhelmingly selected Mark Carney to serve as its new leader in a vote on Sunday. Carney replaces Justin Trudeau, the outgoing Prime Minister of Canada, who has led the North American nation for the last 10 years.

In January, Trudeau announced his intention to resign from office after his party named a new leader. Carney is expected to officially replace Trudeau as prime minister when Parliament reconvenes later this month.

While Carney has never held elected or political office, he has been in the public eye for several years. He’s had a long career in finance and has spent time in multiple countries. Carney has also outlined his philosophy on economics in a book and elaborated on his vision for the country in a speech following his victory.

Here are five things to know about Canada’s new Liberal Party leader who’s expected to face opponents in the next federal election before October.
