From ‘Boy Scouts’ to ‘Scouts’: The scouting organization of America is changing its name

The Boy Scouts of America, for the first time in its 108-year history, changes the name of its signature group.

The word “boy” is dropped from the name of the organization in order to have a gender-neutral name. This idea arrives with the organization’s decision to accept girls next year.

The Associated Press reported that the scouting organization will be called Scouts BSA starting in February 2019.

Girls already started enrolling as Cub Scouts this year, and more than 3,000 have reportedly joined so far.

By next year, older girls will be able to join Scouts BSA and try to become Eagle Scouts, just like the boys.

The parent organization will continue being called Boy Scouts of America, even though the scouting group’s name is changing.

Mike Surbaugh, Chief Scout Executive, said the association considered many other “incredibly fun” names before settling on a decision.

“We wanted to land on something that evokes the past but also conveys the inclusive nature of the program going forward. We’re trying to find the right way to say we’re here for both young men and young women.” Surbaugh said.

Although for some people it sounds like a great idea, some others don’t agree with the decision. For that reason, debates have taken part on social media. What is your point of view?
