Christian geneticist, NIH Director tells churches to stay closed as Covid-19 still spreads in US

According to information from health experts, covid-19 infections, hospitalizations and deaths reach record levels across US. Based on that, Christian geneticist, NIH Director is urging churches to remain closed.

Francis Collins ,Christian geneticist and U.S. National Institutes of Health Director.

Francis Collins, a  Christian geneticist and the U.S. National Institutes of Health Director  advised the places of worship to postpone in-person services due to covid-19; affirming that right now “the virus is having a wonderful time right now spreading through this country.”

During an online conversation Thursday about soon to be released covid-19 vaccines, Collins said: “I know people are tired of hearing these messages and having to be acting upon them, but the virus does not care that we are tired. The virus is having a wonderful time right now spreading through this country, taking advantage of circumstances where people have let their guard go down. We need to be just absolutely rigorously adherent to things that we know work. But they don’t work unless everybody actually sticks to them faithfully without exception.”

The geneticist affirmed that “Churches gathering in person is a source of considerable concern and has certainly been an instance where super spreading has happened and could happen again.”

“So I think most churches really ought to be advised, if they are not already doing so, to go to remote, virtual kinds of services. That’s the way I’m having my experiences as a churchgoer,” he added.

Besides expressing his point of view in relation to churches and their services, Collins also said help in on the way; referring to potential vaccines close to a point of receiving approval for emergency use authorization by the Food and Drug Administration.

“For the two vaccines that are furthest along, Pfiizer and Moderna, we were delighted, thrilled, amazed to see that it looked like the effectiveness was about 95 percent. That is so much better than what you can expect to see with a new illness of this sort,” Collins said.

There will be a public meeting on Dec. 10 to discuss the Pfizer vaccine regarding safety and efficacy.
