And looking back, he saw them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord: and there came forth two bears out of the forest, and tore of them two and forty boys.


So Esdras arose, and made the chiefs of the priests and of the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they would do according to this word. And they swore.


And whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king diligently, judgment shall be executed upon him, either unto death, or unto banishment, or to the confiscation of goods, or at least to prison.


And I pleaded the matter against the magistrates, and said: Why have we forsaken the house of God? And I gathered them together, and I made them to stand in their places.


And I rebuked the chief men of Juda, and said to them: What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the sabbath day?


And their children spoke half in the speech of Azotus, and could not speak the Jews' language; but they spoke according to the language of this and that people.


Moreover I shook my lap, and said: So may God shake every man that shall not accomplish this word, out of his house, and out of his labours. Thus may he be shaken out and become empty. And all the multitude said: Amen. And they praised God. And the people did according to what was said.


And I was exceedingly angry when I heard their cry according to these words.


Their infirmities were multiplied: afterwards they made haste. I will not gather together their meetings for blood offerings: nor will I be mindful of their names by my lips.


Neither shalt thou take of their daughters a wife for thy son: lest after they themselves have committed fornication, they make thy sons also to commit fornication with their gods.


They that forsake the law, praise the wicked man: they that keep it, are incensed against him.


I have given my body to the strikers, and my cheeks to them that plucked them: I have not turned away my face from them that rebuked me and spit upon me.


Take heed diligently lest thou forget the Lord, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and shalt serve him only: and thou shalt swear by his name.


Neither shalt thou make marriages with them. Thou shalt not give thy daughter to his son, nor take his daughter for thy son.


But if you will embrace the errors of these nations that dwell among you, and make marriages with them, and join friendships:
