For he brought upon them the king of the Chaldeans: and he slew their young men with the sword in the house of his sanctuary. He had no compassion on young man, or maiden, old man, or even him that stooped for age; but he delivered them all into his hands.


But Moses besought the Lord his God, saying: Why, O Lord, is thy indignation kindled against thy people, whom thou hast brought out of the land of Egypt, with great power, and with a mighty hand?


Full of clamour, a populous city, a joyous city: thy slain are not slain by the sword, nor dead in battle.


And I will feed them with the flesh of their sons and with the flesh of their daughters: and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege, and in the distress wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their lives shall straiten them.


And after this, saith the Lord, I will give Sedecias the king of Juda, and his servants, and his people, and such as are left in this city from the pestilence and the sword and the famine, into the hand of Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life: and he shall strike them with the edge of the sword, and he shall not be moved to pity nor spare them nor shew mercy on them.


The prophets prophesied falsehood, and the priests clapped their hands: and my people loved such things. What then shall be done in the end thereof?


Coph. I called for my friends, but they deceived me: my priests and my ancients pined away in the city, while they sought their food to relieve their souls.


Jod. The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children: they were their meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people.


Mem. For the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests that have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her.


Phe. The face of the Lord hath divided them, he will no more regard them: they respected not the persons of the priests, neither had they pity on the ancient.


Therefore the fathers shall eat the sons in the midst of thee, and the sons shall eat their fathers: and I will execute judgments in thee, and I will scatter thy whole remnant into every wind.


And he said to them: Defile the house and fill the courts with the slain. Go ye forth. And they went forth and slew them that were in the city.


So that you shall eat the flesh of your sons and of your daughters.


And praying, I said: O Lord God, destroy not thy people, and thy inheritance, which thou hast redeemed in thy greatness, whom thou hast brought out of Egypt with a strong hand.
