And Elias the Thesbite of the inhabitants of Galaad said to Achab: As the Lord liveth, the God of Israel, in whose sight I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to the words of my mouth.


Hear thou our God, for we are despised. Turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them to be despised in a land of captivity.


Help us, O God, our saviour: and for the glory of thy name, O Lord, deliver us: and forgive us our sins for thy name's sake:


For the sins of the lips ruin draweth nigh to the evil man: but the just shall escape out of distress.


A mild answer breaketh wrath: but a harsh word stirreth up fury.


They answered him: The Lord who heareth these things, he himself is mediator and witness that we will do as we have promised.


And when I saw this, I put my life in my own hands, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and the Lord delivered them into my hands. What have I deserved that you should rise up to fight against me?


And the Galaadites secured the fords of the Jordan, by which Ephraim was to return. And when any one of the number of Ephraim came thither in the flight, and said: I beseech you let me pass; the Galaadites said to him: Art thou not an Ephraimite? If he said: I am not;


But Nabal answering the servants of David said: Who is David? And what is the son of Isai? Servants are multiplied nowadays who flee from their masters.
