THEN therefore, Pilate took Jesus, and scourged him.


But Paul said to them: They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men that are Romans, and have cast us into prison: and now do they thrust us out privately? Not so; but let them come,


And some cried one thing, some another, among the multitude. And when he could not know the certainty for the tumult, he commanded him to be carried into the castle.


And as Paul was about to be brought into the castle, he saith to the tribune: May speak something to thee? Who said: Canst thou speak Greek?


And when there arose a great dissension, the tribune fearing lest Paul should be pulled in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.


This man being taken by the Jews, and ready to be killed by them, I rescued coming in with an army, understanding that he is a Roman:


Who, when they had examined me, would have released me, for that there was no cause of death in me;


Women received their dead raised to life again. But others were racked, not accepting deliverance, that they might find a better resurrection.
