And when the angel of the Lord had stretched out his hand over Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord had pity on the affliction, and said to the angel that slew the people: It is enough. Now hold thy hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the thrashing-floor of Areuna the Jebusite.


Behold, I will send a spirit upon him, and he shall hear a message, and shall return into his own country: and I will make him fall by the sword in his own country.


Either three years' famine: or three months to flee from thy enemies, and not to be able to escape their sword: or three days to have the sword of the Lord, and pestilence in the land, and the angel of the Lord destroying in all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore see what I shall answer him who sent me.


And David, lifting up his eyes, saw the angel of the Lord standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand, turned against Jerusalem. And both he and the ancients clothed in haircloth fell down flat on the ground.


And when Juda came to the watch-tower, that looketh toward the desert, they saw afar off all the country, for a great space, full of dead bodies; and that no one was left that could escape death.


Or will God forget to shew mercy? or will he in his anger shut up his mercies?


There shall no evil come to thee: nor shall the scourge come near thy dwelling.


O Lord, how great are thy works! thy thoughts are exceeding deep.


For the Lord will pass through striking the Egyptians: and when he shall see the blood on the transom, and on both the posts, he will pass over the door of the house, and not suffer the destroyer to come into your houses and to hurt you.


For now I will stretch out my hand to strike thee, and thy people with pestilence: and thou shalt perish from the earth.


And therefore have I raised thee, that I may shew my power in thee: and my name may be spoken of throughout all the earth.


Behold, the sovereign Lord of hosts shall break the earthen vessel with terror. And the tall of stature shall be cut down: and the lofty shall be humbled.


In the time of the evening, behold, there shall be trouble: the morning shall come, and he shall not be. This is the portion of them that have wasted us, and the lot of them that spoiled us.


And the angel of the Lord went out, and slew in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and eighty-five thousand. And they arose in the morning, and behold, they were all dead corpses.


And I will have mercy on the house of Juda, and I will save them by the Lord their God: and Iwill not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, nor by horses, nor by horsemen.


And forthwith an angel of the Lord struck him, because he had not given the honour to God: and being eaten up by worms, he gave up the ghost.
