And he made haste because his heart was moved upon his brother, and tears gushed out. And going into his chamber he wept.


Divide, said he, the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.


The king answered, and said: Give the living child to this woman, and let it not be killed; for she is the mother thereof.


And he heard my prayers, and brought me out of the pit of misery and the mire of dregs. And he set my feet upon a rock, and directed my steps.


Can a woman forget her infant, so as not to have pity on the son of her womb? And if she should forget, yet will not I forget thee.


Surely Ephraim is an honourable son to me, surely he is a tender child: for since I spoke of him, I will still remember him. Therefore are my bowels troubled for him: pitying, I will pity him, saith the Lord.


How shall I deal with thee, O Ephraim, shall I protect thee, O Israel? how shall I make thee as Adama, shall I set thee as Seboim? my heart is turned within me, my repentance is stirred up.


Foolish, dissolute, without affection, without fidelity, without mercy.


For God is my witness, how I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.


If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of charity, if any society of the spirit, if any bowels of commiseration:


Without affection, without peace, slanderers, incontinent, unmerciful, without kindness,


He that hath the substance of this world, and shall see his brother in need, and shall shut up his bowels from him: how doth the charity of God abide in him?
