As the Lord thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee. And when all answered: He is not here, he took an oath of every kingdom and nation, because thou wast not found.


And when he had seen him, he said: Art thou he that troublest Israel?


Achab sent to all the children of Israel, and gathered together the prophets unto mount Carmel.


And Elias said again to the people: I only remain a prophet of the Lord: but the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty men.


Elias said to all the people: Come ye unto me. And the people coming near unto him, he repaired the altar of the Lord, that was broken down.


For when Jezabel killed the prophets of the Lord, he took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifty and fifty in caves, and fed them with bread and water.


With zeal have I been zealous for the Lord God of hosts; because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant. They have destroyed thy altars; they have slain thy prophets with the sword. And I alone am left: and they seek my life to take it away.


And Jezabel sent a messenger to Elias, saying: Such and such things may the gods do to me, and add still more, if by this hour to-morrow I make not thy life as the life of one of them.


And behold a prophet coming to Achab king of Israel said to him: Thus saith the Lord: Hast thou seen all this exceeding great multitude? Behold, I will deliver them into thy hand this day: that thou mayest know that I am the Lord.


(And a prophet coming to the king of Israel said to him: Go, and strengthen thyself, and know, and see what thou dost: for the next year the king of Syria will come up against thee.)


Then a certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his companion in the word of the Lord: Strike me. But he would not strike.


And the king of Israel said to Josaphat: There is one man left, by whom we may inquire of the Lord, Micheas the son of Jemla; but I hate him, for he doth not prophesy good to me, but evil. And Josaphat said: Speak not so, O king.


And he said to him: Come with me, and see my zeal for the Lord. So he made him ride in his chariot,


But they provoked thee to wrath, and departed from thee, and threw thy law behind their backs. And they killed thy prophets, who admonished them earnestly to return to thee. And they were guilty of great blasphemies.


Thou shalt not adore them, nor serve them. I am the Lord thy God, mighty, jealous, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me:


Adore not any strange god. The Lord his name is Jealous: he is a jealous God.


And I said: I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength without cause and in vain. Therefore my judgment is with the Lord, and my work with my God.


In vain have I struck your children: they have not received correction. Your sword hath devoured your prophets: your generation is like a ravaging lion.


And the king commanded Jeremiel the son of Amelech and Saraias the son of Ezriel and Selemias the son of Abdeel, to take up Baruch the scribe and Jeremias the prophet: but the Lord hid them.


Ephraim is under oppression, and broken in judgment: because he began to go after filthiness.


For thou hast kept the statutes of Amri, and all the works of the house of Achab: and thou hast walked according to their wills, that I should make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof a hissing, and you shall bear the reproach of my people.


The holy man is perished out of the earth, and there is none upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood, every one hunteth his brother to death.


Phinees, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned away my wrath from the children of Israel: because he was moved with my zeal against them, that I myself might not destroy the children of Israel in my zeal.


And the covenant of the priesthood for ever shall be both to him and his seed, because he hath been zealous for his God, and hath made atonement for the wickedness of the children of Israel.


And his disciples remembered, that it was written: The zeal of thy house hath eaten me up.


And the Lord said to Moses: Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, and this people rising up will go a-fornicating after strange gods in the land, to which it goeth in to dwell. There will they forsake me, and will make void the covenant, which I have made with them,


They were stoned, they were cut asunder, they were tempted, they were put to death by the sword, they wandered about in sheepskins, in goatskins, being in want, distressed, afflicted:
