And a famine occurred, during the days of David, for three years continuously. And David consulted the oracle of the Lord. And the Lord said: "This is because of Saul, and his house of bloodshed. For he killed the Gibeonites."


And she responded: "As the Lord your God lives, I have no bread, except a handful of flour in a jar, and a little oil in a bottle. See, I am collecting a couple of sticks, so that I may go in and make it for myself and my son, so that we may eat it and die."


And there were those who were saying: "Our sons and our daughters are very many. Let us receive grain as a price for them, and then we may eat and live."


When he will be satisfied, he will be constrained; he will seethe, and all anguish will fall upon him.


The offspring of his house will be exposed; he will be pulled down in the day of God's wrath.


Some distribute their own goods, and they become wealthier. Others seize what is not their own, and they are always in need.


Then ten acres of vineyard will produce one small bottle of wine, and thirty measures of seed will produce three measures of grain.


They sowed wheat, but they reaped thorns. They received an inheritance, but it will not benefit them. You will be confounded by your own fruits, because of the wrath of the fury of the Lord.


Because of the devastation of the earth, because rain did not fall upon the earth, the farmers were confounded; they covered their heads.


But since the time that we ceased to offer sacrifice to the queen of heaven, and to pour out libations to her, we have been in need of all things, and we have been consumed by the sword and by famine.


And they will eat and not be satisfied. They have been committing fornication, and they did not cease. Since they have abandoned the Lord, they will not be safeguarded.


For they will sow wind and reap a whirlwind. It does not have a firm stalk; the bud will yield no grain. But if it does yield, strangers will eat it.


Your labor will be consumed to no purpose; the land will not bring forth seedlings, nor will the trees provide their fruit.


After this, I will have broken the staff of your bread, so that ten women bake bread in one oven, and distribute it by weight. And you shall eat and not be filled.


Because of this, the heavens over you have been prohibited from giving dew, and the earth has been prohibited from giving her sprouts.


And now, thus says the Lord of hosts: Set your hearts upon your ways.

You have looked for more, and behold, it became less, and you brought it home, and I blew it away. What is the cause of this, says the Lord of hosts? It is because my house is desolate, yet you have hurried, each one to his own house.


And now, consider in your hearts, from this day and beyond, before stone may be placed upon stone in the temple of the Lord:


when you approached a pile of twenty measures, and they became ten, and you entered to the press, to press out fifty bottles, and they became twenty,


I will bring it forth, says the Lord of hosts, and it will approach to the house of the thief, and to the house of him who swears falsely by my name, and it will remain in the midst of his house and will consume it, with its wood and its stones.


Indeed, before those days, there was no pay for men, nor was there pay for beasts of burden, and neither was there peace for those entering, nor for those exiting, because of the tribulation. And I had dismissed all men, each one against his neighbor.


If you will refuse to listen, and if you will refuse to take it to heart, so as to give glory to my name, says the Lord of hosts, I will send destitution upon you, and I will curse your blessings; yes, I will curse them. For you have not taken it to heart.


Cursed shall be your barn, and cursed your storehouses.
