For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.


"Take care not to be doing your charitable giving before men, so as to be seen by them. Otherwise, you have not a reward from your Father in heaven.


"Moreover, when you fast, do not become gloomy, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly I say to you, that they receive their reward in full.


"And whenever you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray standing in the synagogues, and on the streetcorners, so that they may be seen by men. Assuredly I say to you, that they receive their reward in full.


Then the disciples of John approached Him, saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?"


But woe to you Pharisees! Because you pay a tithe of mint and rue and every vegetable, and you pass over justice and the love of God. These things you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.


So likewise you, whenever you do all the things having been commanded to you, say, 'We are unprofitable servants. We have done what we ought to do.' "


Where then is the boasting? It is excluded. Through what law? Of works? No, but through the law of faith.


so that no flesh may boast before God.


And I was advancing in Judaism above many my own age, being far more zealous for the traditions of my forefathers.


not of works, lest anyone should boast.


For bodily exercise is profitable a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the present life and of the coming life.
