And while Absalom was offering the sacrifices, he sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, from his city Giloh. And the conspiracy grew strong, and the people with Absalom kept increasing.


All my intimate friends abhor me, and those whom I loved have turned against me.


But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.


But it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend.


We used to take sweet counsel together; within God’s house we walked in the throng.


Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by.


For I hear many whispering. Terror is on every side! “Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” say all my close friends, watching for my fall. “Perhaps he will be deceived; then we can overcome him and take our revenge on him.”
