Now as He was going out into the road, one came running up, and having knelt before Him, he asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?"


But answering He said to them, "What did Moses command you?"


Then one of the scribes came, after he heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him, "Which is the first commandment of all?"


for I tell you that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and they did not see them, and to hear what you hear, and they did not hear."


He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read it?"


Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"


But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God for themselves, because they had not been baptized by him.


But this they said, testing Him, that they might have an accusation against Him. But Jesus, stooping down, began to write on the ground with His finger, not taking notice.


For if the inheritance comes by the law, it is no longer of promise; but God has given it to Abraham by promise.
