“But wae for you, ye rich anes! for ye are noo haein yere consolation.


“Alack! whan aʼ folk speak weel oʼ ye! for eʼen sae did their faithers to the fause prophets.


And they made derision oʼ him, kennin she was deid.


Nor shamelessness, nor glaikit speech, nor levity; whilk are‐na fittin; but raither giean oʼ thanks.


At siccan times as they may be sayin, “Peace and safety”; than, oʼ a suddaintie, destruction comes on them — as birth‐pangs on a bearin wumman — and in naegate may they escape.


Be ye dool, and maen and greet! lat yere daffin be turned to lamentation, and joy to heaviness.
