Then Abner called to Joab, and said, “Will the sword devour forever? Don’t you know that it will be bitterness in the latter end? How long will it be then, before you ask the people to return from following their brothers?”


Then YHWH commanded the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.


Rise up, YHWH! Confront them! Bring them down. Deliver my soul from the wicked by your sword.


Does an ax brag exalt itself above the one who chops with it? Does a saw make itself important than the one who saws with it? As if a rod should lifting the one who lifts it, or as a staff lifting up the one who isn’t wood.


Alas Assyrian, the rod of my anger, the staff in whose hand is my indignation!


Destroyers have come on all the bare heights in the wilderness; for the sword of YHWH devours from the one end of the land even to the other end of the land. No flesh has peace.


How long will the land mourn, and the herbs of the whole country wither? Because of the wickedness of those who dwell therein, the animals and birds are consumed; because they said, “He won’t see our latter end.”


“I will appoint over them four kinds of judgment,” says YHWH: “the sword to kill, the dogs to tear, the birds of the sky, and the animals of the earth, to devour and to destroy.


“You are to tell them, ‘YHWH Almighty, the God of Israel says: “Y’all are to drink, get drunk, and vomit. Then y’all will fall and rise no more, because of the sword I will send among y’all.”’


How long will I see the standard and hear the sound of the trumpet?


“Cursed is the one who does the work of YHWH negligently, and cursed is the one who restrains their sword from bloodshed.


“A sword is on the Chaldeans,” says YHWH, “and on the inhabitants of Babylon, on her princes, and on her wise men.


“Or if I bring a sword on that land, and say, ‘Sword, go through the land, so that I cut off from it man and animal’—


Cause it to return into its sheath. In the place where you were created, in the land of your birth, I will judge you.


“Awake, sword, against my shepherd, and against the man who is close to me,” says YHWH Almighty. “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; and I will turn my hand against the little ones.


Then Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword back into its sheath. Should I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”


The three companies blew the trumpets, broke the pitchers, and held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands with which to blow; and they shouted, “The sword of YHWH and of Gideon!”
