7 “Therefore now YHWH, the God of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Why do y’all commit great disaster against your* own souls? Y’all are cutting of every man and woman, infant and nursing baby from Judah to leave yourselves* without a remnant.

but these lay in wait for their own blood. They lurk secretly for their own lives.


He who refuses correction despises his own soul, but he who listens to reproof gets understanding.


The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare him. The cords of his sin hold him firmly.


But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul. All those who hate me love death.”


Y’all must not go after other gods to serve them or worship them, and y’all must not provoke me to anger with the work of y’all’s hands. Then I will not harm y’all.”


“But y’all have not listened to me,” declares YHWH, “and y’all provoked me to anger with the work of y’all’s hands and brought disaster on yourselves*.”


Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? Didn’t he fear YHWH, and entreat the favor of YHWH, and YHWH relented from the disaster that ʜᴇ had pronounced against them? But we are committing great disaster on own souls!”


But the shameful thing has devoured the labor of our ancestors from our youth, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.


Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “YHWH, the God of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you will go out to the officers of the king of Babylon, then your life will be spared, and this city will not be burned with fire. You and your house will live.


For y’all have dealt deceitfully against your* own souls. For y’all sent me to YHWH y’all’s God, saying, ‘You must pray for us to YHWH our God. Declare to us all that YHWH our God says, and we will do it.’


None of the remnant of Judah who have gone into the land of Egypt to live there will escape or be left to return into the land of Judah where they want to return to live there. For no one will return except those who will escape.’”


Y’all provoke me to anger with the works of your* hands, burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt where y’all have gone to live. Y’all will be cut off and y’all will become a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth.


With you I will shatter man and woman. With you I will shatter the old man and the youth. With you I will shatter the young man and the virgin.


Do they provoke me to anger?” says YHWH. “Don’t they provoke themselves, to the confusion of their own faces?”


For death has come up into our windows. It has entered into our palaces to cut off the children from outside, and the young men from the streets.


My eyes fail with tears. My heart is troubled. My bile is poured on the earth, because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, because the young children and the infants swoon in the streets of the city.


“You have called, as in the day of a solemn assembly, my terrors on every side. There was no one that escaped or remained in the day of YHWH’s anger. My enemy has consumed those whom I have cared for and brought up.


Tell them, ‘“As surely as I live,” says Lord YHWH, “I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Y’all must turn, turn from your* evil ways! Why will y’all die, house of Israel?”’


Y’all are to slaughter the old men, the young men, the virgins, the little children, and the women. But y’all must not approach any man who has the mark. Begin at my sanctuary!” Then they began with the old men who were before the house.


You have devised shame to your house by cutting off many peoples, and have sinned against your soul.


As for the censers of those who sinned against their own lives, y’all are beat them into plates for a covering of the altar, for they offered them before YHWH. Therefore they are holy. They will be a sign to the children of Israel.”


Outside the sword will bereave, and in the rooms, terror on both young man and virgin, the nursing infant with the gray-haired man.


They utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, both young and old, and ox, sheep, and donkey, with the edge of the sword.


This is what y’all are to do: y’all must totally destroy every male, and every woman who has had known a man in bed.”


Now go and strike Amalek. Y’all are to totally destroy all that they have. Don’t spare them, but kill both man and woman, infant and nursing baby, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”


He struck Nob, the city of the priests, with the edge of the sword—both men and women, children and nursing babies, and cattle, donkeys, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.
