He gave a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign which YHWH has spoken: The altar will be split apart, and the ashes that are on it will be poured out.”


“This will be the sign to you: This year, you will eat what grows by itself, and in the second year that which springs from that; and in the third year y’all are to sow and reap, and y’all are to plant vineyards and eat their fruit.


“When Pharaoh speaks to y’all, saying, ‘Y’all do a miracle!’ then you are to tell Aaron, ‘Take your rod, and throw it down before Pharaoh, and it will become a serpent.’”


“‘This will be the sign for you: You will eat this year that which grows by itself, and in the second year that which springs from that. In the third year, y’all are to sow, reap, and plant vineyards, and y’all will eat their fruit.


Hezekiah also had said, “What is the sign that I will go up to the house of YHWH?”


Instead of the thorn the cypress tree will come up; and instead of the brier the myrtle tree will come up. It will make a name for YHWH, for an everlasting sign that will not be cut off.”


YHWH spoke again to Ahaz, saying,


But Ahaz said, “I won’t ask. I won’t put YHWH to the test.”


Thus said YHWH, “Go, and buy a clay jay from a potter and take some of the elders of the people and of the elders of the priests


“Then you are to break the jar in the sight of those who go with you,


“‘This will be the sign to y’all,’ says YHWH, ‘that I will punish y’all in this place, so that y’all will know that my words of disaster will rise-rise against y’all.’


This will be a sign to y’all: y’all will find a baby wrapped in cloth and lying in a feeding trough.”
