Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he was offering the sacrifices. The conspiracy was strong, for the people increased continually with Absalom.


The counsel of Ahithophel, which he gave in those days, was as if a man inquired at the inner sanctuary of God. All the counsel of Ahithophel was like this both with David and with Absalom.


Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” For YHWH had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that YHWH might bring evil on Absalom.


When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey, arose, and went home to his city, set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the tomb of his father.


Then Absalom said, “Now call Hushai the Archite also, and let’s hear likewise what he says.”


Hushai said to Absalom, “The counsel that Ahithophel has given this time is not good.”


He frustrates the plans of the crafty, so that their hands can’t perform their enterprise.


They have also surrounded me with words of hatred, and fought against me without a cause.


YHWH, how my adversaries increase! Many who rise up against me.


Yes, my own close friend, who I trusted, who ate bread with me, has raise his heel against me.


Day and night they prowl around on its walls. Malice and abuse are also within her.


For it was not an enemy who insulted me, then I could have endured it. Neither was it he who hated me who raised himself up against me, then I would have hidden myself from him.


The spirit of the Egyptians will fail within them. I will destroy their counsel. They will seek the idols, the charmers, those who have familiar spirits, and the wizards.


who frustrates the signs of the liars, and makes diviners mad; who turns wise men backward, and makes their knowledge foolish;


I am not speaking about all y’all. I know the ones I have chosen. But this is so that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.’


Where is the wise person? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Hasn’t God made the wisdom of this world foolish?


Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, natural, and demonic.
