Jacob loved Rachel. He said, “I will serve you seven years for Rachel, your younger daughter.”


Y’all ask me a great amount for a dowry, and I will give whatever you ask of me, but give me the young woman as a wife.”


David sent messengers to Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son, saying, “Deliver me my wife Michal, whom I was given to marry for one hundred foreskins of the Philistines.”


Joshua made himself flint knives, and circumcised the sons of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.


The men of Israel were distressed that day; for Saul had adjured the people, saying, “Cursed is the man who eats any food until it is evening, and I am avenged of my enemies.” So none of the people tasted food.


David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the disgrace from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?”


Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear. This uncircumcised Philistine will like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God.”


Saul said to David, “Look, my elder daughter Merab. I will give her to you as wife. Only be valiant for me, and fight YHWH’s battles.” For Saul said, “Don’t let my hand be on him, but let the hand of the Philistines be on him.”


The servants of Saul told him, saying the words that David had spoken.


Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul’s son, greatly delighted in David.
