Suppose they say: “Come with us! Let’s lie in wait for blood! Let’s ambush the innocent— for no reason!


For a seducing woman’s lips drip honey and her mouth is smoother than oil.


For on account of a prostitute one is reduced to a loaf of bread; a man’s wife preys on your precious life.


Do not trust in a friend. Do not trust in a close companion. Guard the openings of your mouth from her who lies on your breast.


Then the men of Ephraim were summoned and crossed over to Zaphon. They said to Jephthah, “Why did you cross over to fight against the children of Ammon without calling us to go with you? We will burn your house over you with fire.”


So he said to them, “Out of the eater came forth food, out of the strong came forth sweet.” But for three days they could not solve the riddle.


Then the Philistines asked, “Who did this?” They were told, “Samson, son-in-law of the Timnite, because he took his wife and gave her to his best man.” So the Philistines came up and burnt her and her father with fire.


So the Philistine lords came up to her and said to her, “Coax him, see where his great strength comes from and by what we may overpower him, so we may bind him to subdue him—then we’ll each of us give you 1,100 pieces of silver.”
