The elder daughter had a son, and she named him Moab; he is the father of the Moabites of today.


The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi; he is the father of the Ammonites of today.


A prophecy against Moab: Ar in Moab is ruined, destroyed in a night! Kir in Moab is ruined, destroyed in a night!


We have heard of Moab’s pride – how great is her arrogance! – of her conceit, her pride and her insolence; but her boasts are empty.


This is what the Lord says: ‘As for all my wicked neighbours who seize the inheritance I gave to my people Israel, I will uproot them from their lands and I will uproot the people of Judah from among them.


Concerning Moab: This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘Woe to Nebo, for it will be ruined. Kiriathaim will be disgraced and captured; the stronghold will be disgraced and shattered.


Concerning the Ammonites: This is what the Lord says: ‘Has Israel no sons? Has Israel no heir? Why then has Molek taken possession of Gad? Why do his people live in its towns?


Lord, you have heard their insults, all their plots against me –


‘And you, son of man, prophesy and say, “This is what the Sovereign Lord says about the Ammonites and their insults: ‘ “A sword, a sword, drawn for the slaughter, polished to consume and to flash like lightning!


The word of the Lord came to me:


Then you will know that I the Lord have heard all the contemptible things you have said against the mountains of Israel. You said, ‘They have been laid waste and have been given over to us to devour.’


This is what the Sovereign Lord says: the enemy said of you, ‘Aha! The ancient heights have become our possession.’ ”


This is what the Lord says: ‘For three sins of Ammon, even for four, I will not relent. Because he ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead in order to extend his borders,


This is what the Lord says: ‘For three sins of Moab, even for four, I will not relent. Because he burned to ashes the bones of Edom’s king,


This is what they will get in return for their pride, for insulting and mocking the people of the Lord Almighty.


Then the Lord said to Joshua, ‘Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.’ So the place has been called Gilgal to this day.
