But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official and Geshem the Arab heard about it, they mocked and ridiculed us. ‘What is this you are doing?’ they asked. ‘Are you rebelling against the king?’


Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.


Restore us, Lord God Almighty; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.

This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: ‘In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.


You come to the help of those who gladly do right, who remember your ways. But when we continued to sin against them, you were angry. How then can we be saved?


Jerusalem, wash the evil from your heart and be saved. How long will you harbour wicked thoughts?


so that, ‘ “they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!” ’


He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God.
