Your own mouth condemns you, not mine; your own lips testify against you.


Those who surround me proudly rear their heads; may the mischief of their lips engulf them.


Send forth lightning and scatter the enemy; shoot your arrows and rout them.


All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads.


Because of all my enemies, I am the utter contempt of my neighbours and an object of dread to my closest friends – those who see me on the street flee from me.


The righteous will see and fear; they will laugh at you, saying,


For the sins of their mouths, for the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. For the curses and lies they utter,


My enemies turn back; they stumble and perish before you.


Evildoers are trapped by their sinful talk, and so the innocent escape trouble.


The mouths of fools are their undoing, and their lips are a snare to their very lives.


Their land will be an object of horror and of lasting scorn; all who pass by will be appalled and will shake their heads.


Was not Israel the object of your ridicule? Was she caught among thieves, that you shake your head in scorn whenever you speak of her?


All who see you will flee from you and say, “Nineveh is in ruins – who will mourn for her?” Where can I find anyone to comfort you?’


At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, ‘The earth is going to swallow us too!’


‘He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,’ they replied, ‘and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants, who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time.’


‘His master replied, “I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?


Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off and cry: ‘ “Woe! Woe to you, great city, you mighty city of Babylon! In one hour your doom has come!”


Then I heard another voice from heaven say: ‘ “Come out of her, my people,” so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues;
