Reach down your hand from on high; deliver me and rescue me from the mighty waters, from the hands of foreigners


Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him.


He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.


Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.


A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.


‘Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me,


When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.


This is what the Lord says: ‘In the time of my favour I will answer you, and in the day of salvation I will help you; I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people, to restore the land and to reassign its desolate inheritances,


Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near.


You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.’


who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.


For he says, ‘In the time of my favour I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.’ I tell you, now is the time of God’s favour, now is the day of salvation.


But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.


It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,
