So they took the bull that was given to them and prepared it. Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. ‘Baal, answer us!’ they shouted. But there was no response; no-one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.


Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no-one answered, no-one paid attention.


They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands.


They spoke about the God of Jerusalem as they did about the gods of the other peoples of the world – the work of human hands.


All who worship images are put to shame, those who boast in idols – worship him, all you gods!

But those who trust in idols, who say to images, “You are our gods,” will be turned back in utter shame.


Who shapes a god and casts an idol, which can profit nothing?

All who make idols are nothing, and the things they treasure are worthless. Those who would speak up for them are blind; they are ignorant, to their own shame.

There you will worship man-made gods of wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or eat or smell.
