For he stands at the right hand of the needy, to save their lives from those who would condemn them.


‘Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan, I will now arise,’ says the Lord. ‘I will protect them from those who malign them.’


He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free,


My whole being will exclaim, ‘Who is like you, Lord? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them.’


For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no-one to help.


May he defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy; may he crush the oppressor.


The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.


Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honours God.


Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of the fatherless,


In you they have treated father and mother with contempt; in you they have oppressed the foreigner and ill-treated the fatherless and the widow.


‘ “Sir,” the servant said, “what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.”


But you have dishonoured the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?
