‘And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you for ever.


‘But if you turn away and forsake the decrees and commands I have given you and go off to serve other gods and worship them,


You say to God, “My beliefs are flawless and I am pure in your sight.”


My words come from an upright heart; my lips sincerely speak what I know.


They almost wiped me from the earth, but I have not forsaken your precepts.


My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,


We have obeyed everything our forefather Jehonadab son of Rekab commanded us. Neither we nor our wives nor our sons and daughters have ever drunk wine


Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.


If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.


He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.
