Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen.


‘Are you so dull?’ he asked. ‘Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them?


But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. ‘Get behind me, Satan!’ he said. ‘You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.’


They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what ‘rising from the dead’ meant.


The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.


But they did not understand what he was saying to them.


Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.


But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.


At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realise that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.


Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, ‘Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me”?


Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no-one asked, ‘What do you want?’ or ‘Why are you talking with her?’
