So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters. He said, ‘Hurry and get out of this place, because the Lord is about to destroy the city!’ But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.


He went in, shut the door on the two of them and prayed to the Lord.


But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official and Geshem the Arab heard about it, they mocked and ridiculed us. ‘What is this you are doing?’ they asked. ‘Are you rebelling against the king?’


‘I have become a laughing-stock to my friends, though I called on God and he answered – a mere laughing-stock, though righteous and blameless!


All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads.


What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.’


‘Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.


He went in and said to them, ‘Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.’


He took her by the hand and said to her, ‘Talitha koum!’ (which means ‘Little girl, I say to you, get up!’).


The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus.


When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but others said, ‘We want to hear you again on this subject.’
