All night long on my bed I looked for the one my heart loves; I looked for him but did not find him.


I slept but my heart was awake. Listen! My beloved is knocking: ‘Open to me, my sister, my darling, my dove, my flawless one. My head is drenched with dew, my hair with the dampness of the night.’


Israel’s watchmen are blind, they all lack knowledge; they are all mute dogs, they cannot bark; they lie around and dream, they love to sleep.


The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.


Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. ‘Simon,’ he said to Peter, ‘are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?


When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.


‘Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap.


When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow.


This is why it is said: ‘Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.’
