It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!


They looked for a way to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd because the people held that he was a prophet.


‘Sir,’ they said, ‘we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, “After three days I will rise again.”


‘Why do you call me good?’ Jesus answered. ‘No-one is good – except God alone.


The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, ‘Surely this was a righteous man.’


Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man,


A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.


They were all filled with awe and praised God. ‘A great prophet has appeared among us,’ they said. ‘God has come to help his people.’


After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, ‘Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.’


The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.


‘You mean he has deceived you also?’ the Pharisees retorted.


They replied, ‘Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.’ [The earliest manuscripts and many other ancient witnesses do not have John 7:53–8:11. A few manuscripts include these verses, wholly or in part, after John 7:36, John 21:25, Luke 21:38 or Luke 24:53.]


Some of the Pharisees said, ‘This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.’ But others asked, ‘How can a sinner perform such signs?’ So they were divided.


He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.


Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die.
